Scripture: “He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’” Deuteronomy 8:17 (NLT) Application: It's so easy to fake piety by strutting around (or driving around in our luxury sedan!) and saying, "I'm blessed by God to have the best." Now it's true that every good thing comes from God (James 1:17), but we are not any better than anyone else, or better people ourselves, because God has chosen to bless us with material things. Consider this: If God held back on those material blessings, would we say:
Let's be honest. Imagine how we might react if we saw a physically dirty, smelly, homeless, toothless woman pushing a rubbish-filled cart around and wearing a T-shirt that read, "I'm the blessed and highly favored daughter of the King!" We'd wonder about that. A better attitude might be too ask, "how does God want me to honor Him in my current circumstances?" Cultivating an attitude of Godly service regardless of what we own (or pretend to own 😉) will give us the balance to soar high with God no matter how He has chosen to favor us. Inside, rich or poor, with our without, we'll feel highly favored, unswayed by the externalities. Prayer: Dear Father, right now, as I am, with what I have or don't have, I praise You and You alone. Although I want a comfortable life for me and my loved ones, I know that You will give me what is best for me at all times. Please gently help me learn to live joyfully at the moment and not to allow my level of joy to be influenced by what exists outside of me. I'm grateful toward You always. Amen.
