Scripture: Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord , my faithful God. Psalms 31:5 NIV Application: There is such an instructional sorting out of troubled emotions in David's poems. Sometimes he focuses on his restfulness in God, using the words that Jesus did on the Cross, "Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord , my faithful God." (Psalms 31:45). David isn't delusional to think his life will be trouble-free, but he boldly expects God to deliver him from every problem. "The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all;"(Psalms 34:19) He knows that relief doesn't come immediately, "Wait for the Lord ; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." (Psalms 27:14). What some people call "karma" is real to David, i.e., if you do wrong, you'll get wrong. "Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made.' (Psalms 7:15) But evil people can't harm us without God's authorization, "Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.(Psalms 27:12). And at that point, our minds should circle back to God for peace (again, Psalm 31:5). °We should read the Psalms for psychological guidance and realignment toward correct thinking. Our emotions will follow correctly. Prayer: Father God, our minds keep returning to problems that may not even occur or be as bad as we imagine. Please give us rest and assurance in Your Word as we wait on Your deliverance from all of our problems. Amen. Scripture: "And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God.'" 1 Sam. 23:16. 'The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe....He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord ’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord .” ' 1 Samuel 24:4,6 Application: Friendship is not standing beside someone and doing what they want you to do. Nor is it guiding them to do what you believe is right. Friendship is helping someone get in touch with the Lord and seeking God's direction. God's direction may seem to be acting contrary to what seems right. But God is moving around more things than we know. The timing we desire may be wrong. The immediate consequences of our actions may disrupt a larger, better plan. Jonathan, prince of Israel, seemed sensitive to this. He didn't tell David what to do. Rather, he reassured David that following the Lord's instruction was the right thing to do. Contrast his assistance with the advice of the warriors at David's side. They were convinced that King Saul's appearance was providential and David should act right then and bring Israel under his leadership. They actually were right, in that eventually, that would be the proper course of action. But the warriors were wrong as to how and when this would come about. As a friend, the first thing to do is to pray for God's direction for yourself. Then go to your friend and pray with them for God's guidance. The instruction He gives will confirm or redirect, but always will be better than our own, no matter how well-intentioned. Prayer: Father, direct us not only on how to act for ourselves, but how we may encourage others to act. Amen. Scripture: "But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down." Psalms 59:11 NIV Application: Jealousy, aka covetousness, is one of the worst of human characteristics. The sinful person is never happy with what God has given them. They fail to reflect on how the Lord blesses them despite their sinfulness. Saul was consumed with jealousy and was soaked in depression. Being king, his meglamania went unchecked. He didn't think he needed God. He could do anything he wished without consequence...or so it seemed. Yet his fall would be greater than most because of his stature and wickedness. David, the target of Saul's jealousy, wrote a song about his need of the Lord's protection as Saul pursued him to kill him. That song contains a curious line asking God not to kill the powerful wicked pursuers right away. Instead, make the fall of the powerful so devastating that the whole world sees this as an example. A mere quick death is not an option. Jimmy Cliff had a popular reggae song, "The Harder They Come, The Harder They Fall." Apt. Prayer: Please protect us from evil, dear Lord, and show the world why the sin of the unrepentant blasphemers leads to devastating annihilation. Amen. |
