Scripture: 'You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!' 2 Timothy 3:1-5 Application: The "last days" probably started the moment Jesus gave up His Spirit to God and breathed His last (Luke 23:46). Ever since then, we have had increasing evidence of how weird people can be. Things that we as Christians see as destined to ruin are being paraded around as noble. Among them are greed, pride, abusiveness, sexual deviancy, familial disintegration, ingratitude, hard-heartedness, hedonism, senseless arguing, lack of self-control, and worst of all, attempts to belittle God. Those characteristics have always been around, but because of increased communication channels and widespread acceptability, these things are seen increasingly as admirable human nature. Weird people. But we lovers of Christ needn't be taken off our correct direction. We needn't be shaken. Our foundation is secure. However, we should not go around swinging the sword of intolerance toward all wicked behavior (no sword could last that long in battle, anyway!). We have to operate like Jesus did. We need to be beacons, gentle beacons of love that Christ had for the world (Matthew 5:14). When Jesus returns, only He can wield the sword strong enough to strike down all this weirdness (Revelation 19:15). Let's try to reduce the casualties. Prayer: Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to be directed by You on how we can show this weird world the Way to avoid the wages of sin. Help us do so, in Your Mighty Name, Amen. Comments are closed.
