Scripture: When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30 NIV Application: "It is finished." We can't understand the gravity of those words without understanding the Bible and human nature. Believers with years of experience studying the Word must take time to grasp their meaning. But what about new Christians? New Christians can appreciate them only if they've experienced the depths of grief for their own misdeeds, yet have been given complete forgiveness and amnesty that they know they don't deserve... And even then, they must appreciate how Someone Who was completely spotless willingly took their place in punishment, even as they and the whole world looked on approvingly... And even then, they must contextualize it all with years of their falling back on promises, being ungrateful, selfish, and committing countless miserable deeds... And then, despite all those horrible negatives, finding themselves recipients of unimaginable glory from the Hands of their Creator, Who vows to love them unconditionally and forever. "It is finished" takes more than a lifetime to appreciate. It starts right now. Prayer: Lord Jesus, we pray that not a day will pass without our being grateful for Your Passion. Amen.
