Scripture:
“Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been. Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.” Genesis 31:2,3 (NIV) “Laban also said to Jacob, ‘Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me. This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me. May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Genesis 31:51-53 (NIV) “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” John 15:18 (NIV) “They [Paul and Barnabas] had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company…” Acts 15:39 (NIV) Application: We will not get along with everyone. It’s no slam against our Christianity or faithfulness. Jesus warned us that this would happen (John 15:18). Beyond issues of faith, personality conflicts occur, even among strong believers (Acts 15:39). We need to ask God for direction, not be surprised if He prescribes separation. Many times, distance keeps peace. Through the separation, we must constantly stay in contact with God, pray, seek His guidance, so that bitterness won’t set in, and perhaps there will be a road toward reconciliation. Prayer: Dear God, we suffer disagreements in this world and even in Your church. Please guide us on how to live with and without each other. Amen.
