Scriptural Reference:
“Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?” 1 Corinthians 8: 9,10 (NIV) “Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10: 25-31 (NIV) Application: Not long ago, we served a homemade black forest cake to Christian friends. We knew they didn’t drink alcohol. Before serving that the cake, we told them that it contained special cherry liqueur. It turns out this didn’t bother our friends and they happily ate the cake. All of us were Christians mature in our faith and understanding of the need for discipline against things, including alcohol, that can lead to sinful actions. As for us as hosts, whether our friends ate the cake or not wouldn’t have diminished our respect for them. Nor would it have changed our own faith in God. The cake was incidental to a great evening of Christian fellowship. That’s what pleased God. Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the liberty You’ve given us to enjoy this world You’ve created. We know that in enjoying that liberty, we must be respectful of the beliefs and limitations of others. Enlighten us daily with Your Word and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
