Scripture: "...she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus." John 20:14. Application: Mary was at the lowest point of her life. Her hopes for her herself and her people were stored up in Jesus. Then He was assassinated. In the span of hours, her feelings had gone from highest elation to lowest misery. She desperately needed to be with Him. She went to the tomb expecting to find His dead body. But He was alive right there. He even spoke to her. Everything she ever wanted was alive and ready to bless her bountifully into eternity. Yet "she did not realize that it was Jesus." How many times have we failed to see Jesus because we were so consumed with our grief, anxiety, and maybe just plain sour-faced meanness? How many times has He been right there offering the comfort we so much needed at the time, but we had rehearsed and prepared our "pity parties" so thoroughly that we wouldn't "flip the script"? Mary went to the tomb expecting problems, e.g., that she wouldn't be able to move the stone. (Mark 16:3) She had her complaints, wails, and tears locked and loaded. We can learn from this. We have to be careful not to rehearse problems and our reaction to them in advance. Doing that just might blind us to Jesus. Prayer: Lord, at our lowest points in life, help us see You. Amen.
