“When He had finished speaking, [Jesus] said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; Luke 5:4-9 NASB95 “Peter said to [Jesus], “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31 NASB95 Application: Peter knew a lot about sinking. At the time he was first called by Jesus to become a disciple, Peter’s first miracle was in a sinking ship. But it was sinking with the bountiful catch of fish that was too much to be contained in just Peter’s boat alone. The reason for the immense blessing? Jesus. Peter also knew how it felt to be overwhelmed by powerful forces that seemed untamable. But as he sank into drowning waters, Peter discovered the Source of his rescue: Jesus. We are invited by Jesus to enjoy the bounty of life and at the same time rescue from life’s problems. We join Jesus, “…buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God…" (Colossians 2:12 NASB95) Prayer: Jesus Christ, Son of God, we let our sinking be because of good things, so we extend our resources for You to multiply, and our hands for You to save. Amen. Comments are closed.
