Scripture: “When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, the Philistines were afraid. “A god has come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.” 1 Samuel 4: 6-8 (NIV) “[The Israelites] said to [the prophet Samuel] , “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have…We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations…”” (1 Sam 8:5, 19, 20) Application: When all they needed to do was to follow God, God’s chosen people envied their hostile neighbors who had kings. (1 Sam 8:5, 19, 20) But the Israelites didn’t realize that these same neighbors feared them because they had God instead of an earthly king. (1 Sam 4:6-8) As Christians, we can’t afford to look to the lost in order to be found. Trust only God’s leadership. Prayer: Father, when we are misled by leaders, please assure us that You always will guide and protect us, and may our faith in You bring others to You. Amen.
