Scriptural References: • “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18 (ESV) • “For [the person God puts in authority] is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.” Romans 13:4 (ESV) • “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…” John 19:10, 11 (NIV) • “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1,2 (NIV) Application: We live in times in which it’s hard to tell which ruler God is using to do God’s work. This may be hard to understand, but it’s biblically true: Don’t try to sort it out. Every ruler is an instrument of God to bring about God’s work. Even if that ruler doesn’t know it. As Christians, we need not be afraid. We are to pray that all rulers, whether we like them or not, will perform God’s work. And also pray that all of us who bow down to the One true God will lead peaceful lives. • Worship God alone, not a particular ruler, political party, nation, or earthly flag. • Try to live peacefully with all people, believers and unbelievers. • Let God sort out the unGodly rulers and people. They’ll get their just punishments, and we’ll get our rewards. Prayer: Dear God, I pray that all worldly authorities will do the work that advances Your will. As they do these things, please make it easy for me and all who worship You to live in peace and enjoy Your kingdom, now and forever. Thank You. Amen.
