Scripture: 'Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance. So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” ... Now in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. He had written in the letter, saying, “Place Uriah in the front line of the fiercest battle and withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and die.” ' 2 Samuel 11:1-3,14-15 NASB Application: Selective editing of the Bible is not new in world history (e.g., to justify slavery in the USA; Naziism), or in personal history (e.g., to justify our pride; unforgiveness of others). The Bible is rich in perspective and applicability. God never forces us, His crowning creation, to do anything, including studying scripture. If we choose, we may ignore it completely. Alternatively, we can read the Bible and obtain a superior knowledge of facts or morality, but miss out completely on the message of how to live a righteous life made possible by the shed blood of Jesus. We twist the Word of God at our own peril, winning the battles of propaganda, but losing the war of our souls. Pray for discernment. Prayer: Father God, thank You for the Bible, and we thank You for Your Holy Spirit Who shows us how to apply it to our lives daily. Amen. Comments are closed.
