Scripture: "Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that Joab led out the army and ravaged the land of the sons of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah and overthrew it. David took the crown of their king from his head, and he found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there was a precious stone in it; and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount." 1 Chronicles 20:1-2 NASB Application: In the USA's Smithsonian Institution, there's a carefully hand-edited version of the Bible condensed to 84 pages by one of the United States' most respected founding fathers and Presidents, Thomas Jefferson. Created at the end of his life, it reflects the core beliefs of this man. Jefferson was of the belief that the Bible was a good moral book, but that was all. Jefferson's book mentions Jesus, but never accepts His divinity or the miracles He performed. Jefferson didn't include the Resurrection. Jefferson thought those aspects of the Lord were too distracting and unbelievable! Compare that to 1 Chronicles 20. That brief chapter tells the story of David's conquest over the royal city of Rabbah. The story is written in a way fit for the historical records in a royal registry. It's impressive. But contrast that to 2 Samuel 11 & 12. This also tells of the defeat of Rabbah, but the historical record is hardly ever the focus. Instead, we focus on David's lust for Bathsheba and his underhanded murder of Bathsheba's husband, Uriah. This perspective is filled with cautionary tales for our personal instruction. Prayer: Father God, we accept that no one is above the Bible, Your Word, and we ask You to have the Holy Spirit lead us every day in the correct application of scripture to our lives. Amen.
