“His followers went to Him and called, “Help us, Lord, or we will die!” He said to them, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then He stood up. He spoke sharp words to the wind and the waves. Then the wind stopped blowing. Then men were surprised and wondered about it. They said, “What kind of a man is He? Even the winds and the waves obey Him.” Matthew 8:25-27 (NLV) “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:13 (NIV) “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Luke 10:36,37 (NLV) Application: We have to get way, way back from "self" in order to pray effectively. The reason we don't work miracles is because we never have. Jesus does. If we glorify ourselves as being the initiators of anything good, we'll surely fail. We're still corrupted seed from Adam. Yes, we certainly are saved (Romans 10:9), but during this time while we are blessed to live on earth, we sin. That’s because the sin nature has not yet been taken from us (Romans 7:25). Only God’s Holy Spirit living within us is good (Mark 10:18). So we must put all notions of ourselves far back from the miracles we want to see happen. When we pray, we pray that Jesus will do the work, perhaps through us, but certainly in spite of us. And those prayers can't be selfish. Not just for ourselves and our families and friends. Most effective miracles come when we pray unselfish prayers for people unlike us. To clear away any subtle spirit of "selfishness," we have to abolish prejudices. Jesus did ( Luke 10:36,37). Prayer: Please remove from my mind, heart, mouth, and spirit any selfishness, and occupy that space entirely, dear God. In our Lord and Savior Jesus’ Name, Amen. Comments are closed.
