Scripture:
'Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. ' 1 Timothy 2:2 NIV Then Jesus said to them, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him. Mark 12:17 NIV If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Matthew 5:41 NIV When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help...The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof..." Matthew 8:5,8 NIV Application: The Bible instructs us to respect those in authority even though God is unquestionably our ultimate Authority Figure. The reasons we respect worldly authority include our desire to live, work, and serve in peace. But there's another reason, one that has Biblical and secular historical significance. Roman soldiers had the power to compel civilians to carry their soldier gear for the equivalent of a mile. As we see with Jesus' ministry, sometimes "going the extra mile" with the authority figure gives us believers more time to bring the Good News of Christ to even those who have power over our lives. Even in our silent contentment, our love for Christ will be apparent. In turn, who knows? Maybe that same authority figure will remember the message and bow to the Lord as their own Authority. Thus, another reason to respect worldly authority is so that we Christians will be attractive representatives of Christ to a world that sorely needs Him. Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us have patience and the right attitude toward those who have authority over our day-to-day lives. Although they never have authority over our souls, we pray that our words and actions will reflect You and entice them to join Your kingdom and act accordingly. Amen. Comments are closed.
