Scripture: "As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” ... Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God.... But Jesus said, “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.''' Luke 21:1-5,12 (NIV) Application: The rich may be impressive in their giving ("the rich [put] their gifts into the temple treasury" verse 1), and even supply wealth towards the building of religious monuments ("the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God" verse 5). However, these same rich people may be the ones who persecute us in front of the very places of worship they so richly endowed ("they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues..." verse 12). It's better to hear the true Word of God alongside the faithful poor than to sit in big church that twists scripture so that its rich congregants can promote themselves. Prayer: Dear Jesus, we pray that we'll always keep our priorities straight and follow Your true teachings, no matter the buildings in which we worship You. Comments are closed.
