Scripture:
“[Moses] say to [Pharaoh], ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.” Exodus 7:19 (NIV) “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1,2 (NIV) “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3 (NIV) Application: Why is it important to pray for leaders? For one thing, we should pray that all people will have hearts opened to receive Jesus as Savior. Leaders are often drunk with power and may not realize the need to bow down to God. So they need special prayer. But the Bible consistently names another major reason to pray for leaders: So that we believers may freely worship the Lord. From Pharaoh (Ex. 7:19) to Ceasar (1 Tim.2:2) to right now, we are instructed pray that leaders will not try to set up obstacles preventing us from worshipping God. And they shouldn’t, out of self-interest. Christians working out our salvation in quiet lives of Godliness, peacefulness, and holiness are the best citizens any leader can ask for. We bring God’s blessings, His love, His peace, His prosperity, and His protection over all who support His people (Genesis 12:3). Prayer: Father, only You are our God, and we pray that our earthly leaders will be saved, and that they won’t try to stop our praising You.
