Scripture: “But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king... If you fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! ... “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. ... Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will perish." 1 Samuel 12:12,14,20,25 NIV Application: Our human fears will lead us to act quite worldly in the face of threats. Imagine a ruthless force coming at us. It seems that the only way out is to look to a worldly solution to the problem. Is that the end of our faith walk? Does God turn His back on us? No. The Bible has many records of God not turning away from people just because they are too afraid to place all their trust in Him. Israel saw the coming terror of vicious king. They wanted to negotiate a peace treaty, even agreeing to be slaves to this king. In his evilness, that king relentlessly threatened to maim and kill Israel. So, naturally, Israel thought it best to have its own battle-ready king. They felt that was the right choice in retrospect, since their new king delivered a brilliant battle victory to save his country. So, was that the best solution? No. It probably wasn't the way God was going to deliver Israel. And the country had a history of turning its back on God. So, does God now turn His back on Israel? No. In fact, God remains as Israel's faithful Protector, and He does the same for every person who accepts Jesus Christ as their only Savior. We make choices based in part on fear and in part on faith. But the condition is that we must never believe that our fear-based choices delivered us, or that we "helped" God. God has endless capacity to put up with our fears, but up to a point. We must remember that He will work through what appear to be human devices to bring about His victory. When He does, we must give God ALL the glory. Never give glory to the worldly solution, and then tack on a "best supporting actor" credit for God. Even in our worldliness and shaky faith, God won't abandon us, but we can't abandon Him. That's the condition. It's fair. It's God. Prayer: We thank You for never abandoning us even when we act out of fear. To You goes ALL the glory. Amen. Comments are closed.
