Scripture: "Moses and Aaron walked from the assembled congregation to the Tent of Meeting and threw themselves facedown on the ground. And they saw the Glory of God." Numbers 20:6 MSG Application: What we call "the Old Testament law" are records of decisions that Moses made after consulting with God for instruction. It's like lawyers' casebooks that recall “precedent,” i.e., prior court decisions to guide future conflicts. And Moses didn't just gather the so-called "Ten Commandments" from God and then "wing it" on his own. He constantly went back to God for instruction on how to deal with the many conflicts going on among the Israelites (e.g., resolving the Meribah waters complaints in Num. 20:2-8). So, although we are blessed to live under the New Covenant, the root of each of these commands in the Old Testament reflect problems that we need to avoid today. Solutions are going to be different, mostly because of our own failings (e.g., stonings for infidelity (Deut. 22:22) are replaced by Jesus' soul-searching requirements for self-examination, non-condemnation, and forgiveness (John 8:1-11)). Both Testaments advise the same process for us: Ask God for direction. Prayer: Lord, thank You for the scriptures, and equally important, thank You for the power of prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Comments are closed.
