Scripture: "I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death...You have taken from me friend and neighbor— darkness is my closest friend." Psalms 88:18 Application: Listen carefully to older people when they talk about yet another of their contemporaries passing away. For them, news of the death of a classmate, childhood friend, cousin, or person about their same age becomes a regular announcement. These survivors seem to wonder why they're still around; whether there's some unfinished purpose God wants them to fulfill. The Bible is captures this feeling in a relatable way! Sometimes it's hurtful for us to hear these older survivors talk like this. When we look at their lives, we see tremendous good that they continue to do for the world. They listen to us, give us advice, and give us hope as they reflect on the bad and good times they've endured. Sometimes, they needn't do anything at all. Just knowing that they're still on earth gives us hope. In other words, they needn't "do great big things" to do great small things. We also can do great small things. Encourage these older people. Encouragement is the essence of being a Christian. (Hebrews 3:13) Prayer: Father, give us the opportunity to encourage older people today. Amen. Comments are closed.
