Scripture:
“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do…Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:25, 27 (NIV) Application: Temptation doesn’t just beckon us for our attention, it screams. Greek mythology tells of how Odysseus needed to keep his soldiers from being seduced by the song of the Sirens. If the men listened, they’d sail away from their mission and become shipwrecked. Every day the devil sends out his sirens designed to lure us away from our Godly mission. We need something to keep us on course. Odysseus had his men plug their ears with beeswax to prevent them from hearing the song. We have the Word of God. We must keep studying at it. But there’s more we need to do. We need to combine the Word with action. That happens when we take our minds off our own worldly passions and perform charitable acts to help others. That’s our only hope to prevent temptation from shipwrecking our lives. Prayer: Dear God, please give me scripture, Christian music, Godly friends, and charitable activities to keep me in Your will. The life You’ve given me is too precious for me to sail off course. Amen.
