I'm traveling with a non-Christian who rarely uses phrases like "I'm thankful for…" or "that's nice" or "we're blessed." Her way of engaging others in conversation, I've observed, is to find something wrong with a third party or situation and express her unhappiness aloud, hoping others will join in the criticism.
She's not alone. In this world, with all its troubles, expressing dislike or criticism is the norm. I see this trip as an opportunity to lead by example. But it's a tender balance. I can't be too sappy that my encouraging comments and come across as overboard and fake. But on the other hand, I have be gentle with her and not snap out with frustration brought on by her perpetual complaints. Lord, help me. Scriptural reference: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15 NIV Application: Consider someone who constantly complains. How can you effectively encourage them to build a relationship with Christ?
